I think there is no argument that almost all people love nature. Whether you’re a hunter or a fisherman, someone just going for a walk, or you just happen to look up and see a goose flying overhead. Nature has this way of infiltrating our lives in small ways. Instilling or evoking these deep emotions inside of us. You don’t have to be a hunter or a fisherman to share a story about how you saw a deer on your way home from work with your family. I think it’s instinctual that most people love nature and the wildlife that inhabits it. I know I sure as hell do. I know though that I am definitely not alone in having the feeling that I need to do more. Specifically do more to protect, preserve, and perpetuate the public lands and wildlife that this beautiful country has to offer.
A conservationist is “A person who advocates or acts for the protection and preservation of the environment and wildlife.” Being a hunter and a fisherman I know the basics of being a conservationist. I chose to buy a hunting and fishing license, a duck stamp, and do little things in my everyday life to help out like pick up trash. For a while now I have wanted to start playing a more influential role in being a conservationist. Besides giving my dollars and volunteering my time, I wanted to inform people what they could do as well. I find many hunters and fisherman, as well as people who are not are uninformed about what they could do to protect, preserve, and perpetuate the environment and its wildlife.
Since I myself am a broke college kid I don’t have much money to contribute to conservation. However I do have time to help contribute to conservation. In this section of my blog I wanted to take this opportunity to share ways that you could partake in conservation either with your time or monetarily. In doing all of this I know that I am going to be just one link in this giant chain. However, I hope in the end that this chain does something remarkable in order to help conservation.
- Steelhead In The Great Lakes: How Did They Get There?
This past couple of weeks I’ve been getting my worm wet trying to catch some steelhead. Lucky for me where I live, I have most of southern Lake Ontario and eastern Lake Erie within reasonable driving distance (Which is not reasonable but totally worth it). This year I have done the most steelhead fishing IContinue reading “Steelhead In The Great Lakes: How Did They Get There?”View post to subscribe to site newsletter.
- Corona Conservation: How to keep conservation in mind during a crisis.
As we all probably know by now the world is going through a pandemic. There are people fighting over a roll of toilet paper, and those same people are flocking to the meat department for every last piece of meat. Hunters and anglers being the resilient and resourceful group that we are, find ourselves lookingContinue reading “Corona Conservation: How to keep conservation in mind during a crisis.”View post to subscribe to site newsletter.
- Federal Duck Stamp
The other day I met an older woman who happened to be a pretty accomplished bird watcher. I was talking to a buddy of mine about ducks when she jumped into the conversation and I was surprised to hear how well she knew her waterfowl. We talked for a solid hour about our experiences, whatContinue reading “Federal Duck Stamp”
